The Slice: Steered in the wrong direction

You might have heard the expression, “This is not my first rodeo.”

Well, Lori Trowbridge’s young grandson definitely could not have made that claim.

I’ll let her tell the story.

“I was in Spokane visiting my family and we all went to the fair to see the rodeo,” she wrote. “It was the first time for my grandkids. Kody, my 4-year-old grandson, was concerned that the young steers that were roped and tied were being hurt. My sister Terri explained the process to him and he was fine after that.”

The next day, the kids were playing rodeo.

“Kody was the cowboy and my 4-year-old granddaughter, Tawni, was the cow. Kody would pretend to rope Tawni and sit on her.”

And then, well, it looked like he was clipping her fingernails.

“Later at dinner I was telling the family about what the kids had been doing and about how I couldn’t figure out why Kody was working on fingernails. My sister laughed and said, ‘I told Kody the cowboys were just wrestling the cows down to the ground like you would when you clip your dog’s toenails.’ ”

So cowboy Kody thought that at least one rodeo event involved clipping the animals’ toenails.

Said Trowbridge, “As you might guess, we are not ranchers.”

North face: Terri Charbonneau won a blue ribbon in a photography category at the Northeast Washington Fair in Colville for her creation, “Paperboy.”

A little eerie, isn’t it?

Charbonneau used a real Swell Paper tube, a mannequin face and computer trickery to create the image.

So should the S-R offer boxes like this? Or maybe have the face of the subscriber in each delivery tube?

Or how about having S-R boxes internally adorned with the image of a favorite newspaper staffer.

“Hello, Spokesman-Review? Someone vandalized my Shawn Vestal box. Could you send out another?”
