Preps roundup: University boys stay perfect in GSL cross country

University’s boys improved to 4-0 Wednesday by defeating Mead (3-2) and host Gonzaga Prep (1-5) in Greater Spokane League cross country at Finch Arboretum.

U-Hi edged Mead 26-29 by placing its fifth runner ahead of the Panthers’ fourth. Mead’s Andrew Gardner (16 minutes, 2 seconds) took a 21-second win over U-Hi’s Jake Hombel.

Mead’s girls (4-1) edged G-Prep (4-2) 27-28 on the strength of three runners in the top six. Champion Cyra Carlson ran 20:19 for G-Prep. U-Hi is 0-4.

Also in the league, Central Valley’s girls moved to 5-0 with wins over Shadle Park (3-1) and Ferris (0-6) at Audubon Park. Shadle’s Kendra Weitz (18:31) had a gap of 1:08 on Shadle’s Alex Moore. Shadle’s Nathan Weitz (15:00) was 3 seconds off the course record, but the Highlanders (1-3) were edged by Ferris (2-4) and CV (2-3). Alex Kimsey (15:37) led three Ferris runners in the top six. … Kai Wilmot ran 16:03 at Manito Park as North Central’s boys improved to 5-0 with a 23-32 win over host Lewis and Clark (1-3). Katie Knight (20:18) of NC (2-3) won by 6 seconds over LC’s Gracie Ledwith and Calli VanderWilde, but the Tigers (4-0) cruised to the team win. … At Seimers, Brooklin Young (19:50) edged teammate Mollie Cole (19:50) as Mt. Spokane’s girls (2-3) beat Rogers (0-4). Austin Middleton (17:09) led the way as Mt. Spokane’s boys (5-0) dashed past Rogers (0-4).

• Dan Amann (16:16) and Dayde Collins (16:17) broke away from the pack at the 2-mile mark and set the course record as Deer Park’s boys defeated visiting East Valley 20-35 in the Great Northern League. Megan Benzin (19:34) broke away early and EV’s girls placed five in the top eight for a 23-32 win.

Colleen Lindsay scored two second-half goals to rally host Gonzaga Prep (8-1, 3-0) to a 2-1 win over Mead (6-2, 1-2) in the GSL. Mead led early after Kara Marbury one-touched Carrie Banks’ corner kick. On the winner, Lindsay beat Mead’s goalkeeper to Giulia Oliva’s through ball and shot into an open net. … Also in the GSL, Paige Gallaway took a crossing pass from Holly Miller to score from 6 yards at 57 minutes and Central Valley (7-1, 3-0) went on to a 2-0 win over Shadle Park (3-5, 0-3) at Albi Stadium. The Bears added a goal by Savannah Hoekstra in the final seconds. … Julia Moravec scored the first goal and set up the second as Lewis and Clark (7-0, 3-0) posted a 3-0 win over host North Central (2-4, 1-2) at Merkel Field. Moravec scored at 20 minutes after a scramble in the box, then slipped past the defense and fed Devyn Galland for a 1-on-1 goal at 33 minutes. … Shayla Weiler scored on a penalty kick at 35 minutes for the lead, and Taylor Lang made two second-half saves to preserve U-Hi’s 2-1 win over Mt. Spokane (3-4, 0-3) at Albi. Lexi Clark sent a crossing pass to Laura Seymour at 14 minutes for the Titans (1-2, 1-2). … Maya Bowton, Maegan O’Neill and Athina Brown combined for five goals and three assists as Ferris (5-1, 3-0) beat host Rogers (0-4, 0-3) 9-0.
