Kayaker dies after capsizing in Rock Lake

A man who was rescued after his kayak tipped over Sunday in Rock Lake later died, the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office reported. Several kayakers were in the lake and three fell into the lake about noon as result of high waves caused from wind, the office said in a news release. One kayaker paddled to shore and called for help. When emergency crews arrived two of the three capsized kayakers were still missing. Crews and citizens from the St. John area launched boats and found two men in the water with life jackets about a mile north of the boat launch at Rock Lake Road, the news release said. Both appeared to be suffering from hypothermia and were taken to Spokane hospitals, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance. One was pronounced dead at the hospital.
