Religion Notebook: Easter observances set

Area churches are celebrating Holy Week and Easter with special services and Easter egg hunts.

• Central Baptist Church, 19 W. Shannon Ave., will present a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. today.

Worshippers will sit across from each other with the chairs in the shape of the cross. The service will include Scriptures, and Communion will be served in silence.

The church will offer Sunday school for all ages on Easter Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The Resurrection Service with Holy Communion will be at 11 a.m., and a coffee hour will follow.

• Heritage Congregational Church, 1801 E. 29th Ave., will present a Maundy Thursday dinner at 6 p.m. today and a service with Communion at 7.

The church will offer a Tenebrae service at 7:30 p.m. Good Friday.

Easter celebrations include the Men of Heritage’s breakfast from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The cost to attend the breakfast is $5 per person or $10 per family.

The breakfast will be followed by Easter service at 10 a.m. and an egg hunt after the service.

• Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will present a Maundy Thursday service today at 7 p.m. The service will include a remembrance of the Last Supper, hand washing and Communion.

The church will offer a quiet and meditative Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

Easter Sunday services will be at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

• Minnehaha Covenant Church , 4006 E. Buckeye Ave., will offer a Taize Prayer service on Good Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

A Taize service includes simple, short, sung prayers.

• Unity Church, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present a Good Friday Tenebrae service at 7 p.m.

The service will include a reverse candle-lighting service which begins with a room full of candles and most are extinguished except for one, symbolizing “The One Light” that can never be extinguished.

• Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road, will offer the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m. today.

The center will observe Good Friday with Mass for the Passion of Our Lord at 3 p.m. and Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m.

There will be no Mass at the center on Saturday.

The Rev. Felix Lorge will celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection Easter Sunday at 8 a.m.

• The Fig Tree and World Relief Spokane will offer an ecumenical Easter Sunrise Service at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the Lofty Cross of Inspiration, Greenwood Memorial Terrace, 211 N. Government Way.

The Rev. Deb Conklin of Liberty Park and St. Paul United Methodist churches will give the sermon, “Render Unto God: Which Gods Do We Serve?”

• Northwood Presbyterian Church, 6721 N. Monroe St., will present “The Holy Cross” service at 7:30 p.m. Good Friday.

The church will also offer “Resurrection Sunday” worship service at 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday.

• St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will offer a Seder Supper and Stripping of the Altar at 5:30 p.m. today. An all-night vigil will begin at 8 p.m. Maundy Thursday and continue until noon on Good Friday.

Good Friday services begin at noon with Stations of the Cross, and the church will be open for prayer from 1 to 3 p.m. Good Friday liturgy will be at 7 p.m.

The Great Vigil of Easter will be at 7 p.m. Holy Saturday.

The church will celebrate Easter with Choral Eucharist services at 8 and 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

• Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard St., will present its Easter service featuring an unveiling of the cross and special music Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

• Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline St., will present a potluck Seder meal and Communion today at 6 p.m.

Nursery care will be provided for infants and toddlers, and participants are asked to bring a hot dish, salad or dessert to share.

There will be a meditative service at 7 p.m. on Good Friday.

Easter Sunday services will be at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m.

• St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will offer a Celtic Easter vigil service Saturday at 7 p.m.

The service will include Scripture, song, fire and water, Communion and community. Participants are invited to bring a percussion instrument for the service and a potluck reception will follow.

The church will also offer a Maundy Thursday service with Holy Week readings and rituals today at 7 p.m.

The Good Friday service will be at noon and will include a traditional Passion reading and prayers.

Easter Sunday will include a Festival Communion service, and an Easter egg hunt and reception starting at 9 a.m.

• Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th Ave., will celebrate with an Easter sunrise service Sunday at 6:30 a.m. outside.

The service will be followed by the men’s breakfast.

Easter Resurrection worship services will be at 9 and 11 a.m. and there will be an egg hunt at 10:15 a.m.

• St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., will present Holy Week services Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday at 7 p.m.

Easter Sunday worship services will be at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. Special music for the services includes the choir, organ, brass and timpani.

• Manito United Methodist Church , 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will celebrate the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m. today.

The Chancel Choir will present “Song of the Shadows,” a cantata by Joseph Martin at 7 p.m. Good Friday. The last night of Jesus’ life will be presented in Scripture and song as the candles of Lent are extinguished.

Easter Sunday will be celebrated with a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. on the lawn in front of the church. There will be an Easter breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. and the 10:30 a.m. Easter service will be celebrated with trumpeter Michael Renner.

A community Easter egg hunt will follow the service.

• The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present a soup supper today at 6 p.m. followed by Eucharist at 7.

Good Friday will be observed with a 7 a.m. service, a Good Friday liturgy at noon, Meditations on the Passion of Christ at 1 p.m., the Stations of the Cross at 2 and a candlelight service at 7.

Holy Saturday will be observed with the Great Vigil of Easter at 7 p.m. Attendees should bring a bell to ring at the acclamation.

Easter Sunday will include a Holy Eucharist celebrating the Feast of the Resurrection at 8:30 and 11 a.m.

• St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5810 S. Meadowlane Road, will present Holy Communion with the choir today at 7 p.m.

Good Friday worship service will be at 7 p.m. with the choir.

Easter Sunday services will be celebrated at 7 a.m. with a sunrise service with the choir. There will be an Easter potluck breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and festival worship service with the choir and a children’s message at 10 a.m.

• First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., will present its annual Spring Fling for children Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The event will include Easter candy hunts at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., face painting, free hot dogs, a bouncy castle and inflatable slide.

Greek Orthodox Palm Sunday, Holy Week

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., will offer the bridegroom service on Orthodox Palm Sunday, Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday. The service reflects on Christ at his second coming as the “Bridegroom who comes in the middle of the night.” The services will be at 7 p.m. each night.

On Holy Wednesday, the church will offer Holy Unction at 7 p.m. The Orthodox faithful will be anointed with sacramental oil for the healing of souls and bodies.

Spirituality course

Unity Church, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present its evening series, “Yes is the Answer! So, What’s the Question?” Wednesdays April 11 through May 23 at 7 p.m.

The course is based on the book, “Five Things we Cannot Change … and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them,” by David Richo.

It will blend Western psychology with Eastern spirituality.
