“Miss Representation” - The documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The documentary brings together some of America’s most influential women in politics, news and entertainment, including Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem to give audiences an inside look at the media’s message and depiction of women. Jessica Willis, Elizabeth Kissling and Khalil Islam-Zwart are panelists for the post film discussion moderated by Sally Winkle, director of Women’s and Gender Studies. “Miss Representation” - The Get Lit! festival will host a screening of the award-winning 2011 documentary which examines the portrayal of women in the media.
