Of Pullman and formerly of Moscow, Idaho passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at his Pullman home.
Gil was born May 24, 1937 to Leonard and Lucile Martin in Hanover, PA. Gil spent his childhood in Pennsylvania and California until the family moved to Spokane, WA where he graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in 1955.
Gil attended Whitworth University for a year, transferring to Trinity University (San Antonio, TX) where he graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor degree in Business.
Gil spent his entire career as a textbook and bookstore manager.
He served at Texas Tech, University of Utah and the University of Washington until he accepted a position at the University of Idaho and moved to Moscow, ID in 1965.
Gil was the director and book store manager and served the U of I until his retirement in 1996.
He continued making Moscow his home until 2009 when he moved to Pullman, WA to be closer to his family.
Gil was an active fiber within the Moscow community as well as a member of both the Gritman Medical Center Auxiliary and the Moscow Lions Club International, serving in many organizational positions.
He was also a member of the Daughters of Hawaii in Kailua-Kona, HI.
Gil was most of all devoted to family and friends.
A wonderful dad, a loving grandpa and a devoted friend to many.
His interests included Spokane’s Bloomsday of which he participated for 10 years, coin and wine collecting, playing many card games as well as watching football, basketball and both the winter and summer Olympics.
Gil loved spending time in Hawaii, embracing its culture and being at the beach.
He traveled much including Europe, Hawaii, Caribbean cruises and trips to California’s wine country.
Gil is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Anne Martin Gray of Pullman; his grandson James Gilman Gray of Pullman; a brother David Martin of Los Angeles, CA; and his former spouse Madeline Martin of Pullman.
As was Gil’s request no public services will be planned.
His family will scatter his ashes in Kailua-Kona, HI at a later date.
