Mead’s Regel throws second consecutive no-hitter

Sophomore Zac Regel threw his second consecutive no-hitter on Friday as Mead created a tie for first place in Greater Spokane League baseball with a 5-0 win over Gonzaga Prep.

Regel (2-1) struck out six, walked two and hit one batter as the Panthers tied the visiting Bullpups at 11-2 in the GSL.

Regel pitched a five-inning no-hitter last Saturday in a 10-0 decision over Shadle Park.

College baseball

Steven Halcomb and Brock Slavin had back-to-back, two-out RBI singles in the eighth inning as Gonzaga (23-9, 4-3 WCC) opened a three-game West Coast Conference home series with a 4-2 win over Santa Clara (18-13, 1-6) before 1,388 fans, the third-biggest attendance in Patterson Baseball Complex history.

Gonzaga began its two-out rally off Max Deering (2-2) when Alex Sanford was hit by a pitch and Andy Hunter walked. Derek Peterson (3-0) earned the win in relief, pitching no-hit ball for 1 2/3 innings.

• J.D. Leckenby (4-3) scattered six hits and allowed one run in six innings as Washington State (17-13, 4-5 Pac-12) opened a three-game Pac-12 home series with a 9-2 win over Utah (8-24, 4-9).

Tommy Richards’ two-run single gave the Cougars a 5-1 lead in the fourth. Derek Jones capped WSU’s scoring with a two-run single in the eighth.

• Michael Theofanopoulos (3-3) pitched 6 2/3 sharp innings and California (18-14, 3-7 Pac-12) held on for a 7-6 win over Washington (17-14, 4-6) at Berkeley, Calif., after the Huskies scored three runs after two outs in the ninth.

College softball

Brooke Dahmen finished 3 for 3 with a two-run double in the fifth as Community Colleges of Spokane (16-9, 11-5 NWAACC) defeated Blue Mountain 5-4 to open a doubleheader at Pendleton, Ore.

Megan Skillingstad (Shadle Park) went 3 for 4 in the opener. The Timberwolves (4-12 NWAACC) won the second game 4-3.

• Ally Carda highlighted a seven-run sixth with a two-run homer and Jessica Hall (13-6) struck out six in relief as visiting UCLA (28-11, 5-5 Pac-12) posted a 7-5 win over Washington.

Kylee Lahners staked the Huskies (35-8, 5-7) to a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run homer.

• Amber Meyers and Shelby Carter both homered and were a combined 4 for 8 with five RBIs as North Idaho (18-30, 14-23 Scenic West Athletic Conference) opened a doubleheader at Carson City, Nev., with a 12-4 win over Western Nevada.

The Wildcats (18-28, 13-18) won the second game 15-14 with a six-run 10th. NIC’s Heather Bishop had four hits.

College volleyball

Montana coach Jerry Wagner announced the signing of middle blocker Janele Vogt (North Idaho College/Lewis and Clark High).

Vogt was a member of LC’s 2008 State 4A championship team.

College track and field

Idaho junior Jason Lorentz went 22 feet, 11 inches to win the men’s long jump at the Mondo Midmajor Challenge in Sacramento, Calif.
