Obituary: Bell, Evan William

Age 83

BELL,
Evan William

Evan William Bell, son of Delbert and Elizabeth Bell (McBean), loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother passed from this world into the presence of our Loving God and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ following a battle with Parkinson’s disease on April 12, 2012.

Evan was born in Tacoma, WA on April 10, 1929 where he spent his childhood.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma in 1947.

From there he went to Moody Bible Institute in Chicago where he met the love of his life Shirley May Dobb from Butte, MT.

They were married for 60 years.

After graduating from MBI he enrolled in Seattle Pacific College where he received his degree in Education.

They moved to Spokane in 1955 where Evan began his teaching career with Spokane Public Schools.

He started at Wilson Elementary, moved to Sacajawea Jr High and then in 1966 went to his beloved Shadle Park High School where he retired in 1991.

He taught English, History, Philosophy and Humanities and always expected a lot from his students.

He also made it fun.

His students will probably remember his 5 levels of testing: Exam, Test, Quiz, Quizzo and Quizzerino!

He was also “Mr. Chicalocka” because of the cheer he taught the Shadle students from his high school days.

He loved coaching which included many years of Track and Cross Country and if there was a Shadle sporting event he was likely there.

They raised two sons, Mark William and John Allen while living near Manito Park until later moving to the Shadle area.

He was an Elder and Teacher at Fourth Memorial Church where they were members for over 50 years.

Many times his lessons included translations of Greek words and phrases and he made sure the true meaning of the scriptures were understood.

He is survived by his wife Shirley May Bell; twin brother Irwin Wallace Bell (Joanne) of Oxford, MS; sons Mark (Judy) Spokane, John (Terrea) Prosser, WA; grandchildren Eric Bell (Allyson); Brandon Bell; Lori Little (Dennis); Tammy Bousson (David); and Matt (Patricia) Bateman; great-grandchildren Jacob, Madison, Kelsey, Hilary, Amanda, Riley, and Leah and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Riverview Retirement and Holy Family Hospital for the wonderful care Evan received over the last years of his life.

We will always be grateful.

Viewing will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, April 16 at the funeral home.

A Memorial Service will be held at Fourth Memorial Church on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 5PM, 2000 N Standard, Spokane.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fourth Memorial Church.
