Vandals track and field team has big day in Sacramento

The University of Idaho track and field record book got a thorough going-over as the Vandals made seven entries into the program’s all-time outdoor top-10 list, five in throwing events, as they won five events at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge on Saturday in Sacramento, Calif.

Senior Mike Marshall, with a 10-foot improvement, won the men’s javelin with a throw of 217 feet, 9 inches, No. 4 all time at Idaho. Sophomore teammate Ugis Svazs threw a career-best of 215-3 for second place, sixth all time. Sophomore Kyle Rothwell won the hammer at 192-5.

In the women’s javelin, junior Ellen Rouse notched the sixth-best mark in UI history with a throw of 145-8, good for second place. Teammate Johanna Hocketstaller, a freshman, finished fourth at 135-7, 10th all time. She was fifth in the shot at 45-11 1/4, 10th all time.

On the track, sophomore Holly Stanton won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10 minutes, 56.08 seconds, eighth all time. Junior Anna Kalbrener’s 4:30.19 was good for second in the 1,500 meters and seventh all time.

Senior Andrew Blaser won the men’s 110 hurdles in a wind-aided 14.38, while Stephane Colle took the men’s 1,500 in 3:50.28.

• Whitworth’s Carter Comito (168-4) and Sam Wright (152-4) finished first and second in the discus at the Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg.

Mari Bingham of Eastern Washington won the women’s discus at 141-0 while EWU’s Olivia Midles, competing unattached, took the women’s hammer at 175-10.

Softball

Taylor Gilbert pitched a two-hitter in a six-inning, 9-1 Whitworth victory over George Fox in the opener of a doubleheader at Newberg, Ore., but the Bruins (19-19, 14-12) took the second game 5-4 to grab the fourth and final spot in the next week’s conference tournament, denying the Pirates (18-20, 11-15) a berth.

Sami Parr was 4 for 6 with a homer, triple, double and six RBIs on the day for the Bucs.

Tied at 4 going into the bottom of the second of the second game, Bethany Chriss drove in the winning run for the Bruins.

Whitworth completes its season with another doubleheader at George Fox today.

• Jarica Martarano’s two-run double in the sixth boosted Treasure Valley (11-7) to a 7-6 win in the first game, and the Chukars (12-6) completed a sweep of CC Spokane at Ontario, Ore., with a 2-0 win behind Kristie Garn’s eight-hit, no-walk, six-strikeout shutout in the second game.

Sasquatch players Megan Skillingstad had five hits and Lauren Stewart four, including two doubles for Stewart, on the day.

• Jessica Hall (14-6) struck out 10 and gave up four hits and one walk in pitching UCLA (29-11, 5-6) to a 5-0 Pac-12 victory over Washington (34-9, 5-8) in Seattle.

• Western Nevada swept North Idaho 9-1 and 8-2 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Carson City, Nev.

Rowing

The Washington State women are in fifth place among nine teams after the first day of the Lake Natoma Invitational at Gold River, Calif. The Cougars’ Varsity 4 grabbed a first place in its afternoon race. The event ends today.

• The Gonzaga men won four of five races, including the Varsity 8+, against WSU, to capture the Frawley Cup on the Snake River at Wawawai Landing. The Bulldogs have won the Cup 21 out of 24 times.
