Gonzaga baseball rallies past WSU

Royce Bolinger had three hits and drove in a pair of runs to help the Gonzaga Bulldogs (26-9) rally for a 7-4 victory over the visiting Washington State Cougars (18-15) in nonconference baseball play on Tuesday.

Derek Jones had two hits and two RBIs and Tommy Richards had a solo home run for the Cougars, who led 3-0 after four innings.

• Kevin Hawk drove singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth inning and the Lewis-Clark State Warriors (33-10), ranked 10th in the NAIA poll, held on to defeat the host Whitworth Pirates 6-4 in nonconference play.

Tyler Pfeffer went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for the Pirates (20-13-1).

Golf

The Gonzaga Bulldogs women are poised for a historic finish at the West Coast Conference Championship in Hollister, Calif.

The Bulldogs are a mere two strokes behind 13-time defending champion Pepperdine heading into today’s final round.

Stephanie Corey, playing in the No. 5 spot, led Gonzaga with a 1-over-par 73 in the second round.

Gonzaga trails Pepperdine 609-611. San Francisco is third at 620.

• The Gonzaga Bulldogs men are in fourth place after two rounds of the West Coast Conference Championship in Hollister, Calif.

Saint Mary’s leads with a 15-under-par 561 total, six shots ahead of second-place San Francisco. BYU is third at even-par, while the Bulldogs sit at 4-over 580. San Diego is one shot behind the Zags.

Peter Gullickson leads Gonzaga with a 2-under 142. He is in a three-way tie for eighth place, but just four shots off the pace.

Basketball

Idaho women’s coach Jon Newlee announced that point guard Janelle Weiss, of Chemeketa Community College, signed a national letter of intent to play for the Vandals beginning with the 2012-13 season. The Salem, Ore., native averaged a team-high 14.4 points and 3.7 assists for the Storm last season.

Awards

Idaho Vandals senior Mike Marshall was named the Western Athletic Conference field athlete of the week after winning the javelin at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge last weekend. Marshall’s winning throw of 217 feet, 9 inches was a personal best, leads the WAC and ranks 20th in the West Region this season.

• Idaho Vandals junior Abid Akbar was named the Western Athletic Conference male tennis athlete of the week after winning two singles matches and two doubles matches in conference wins over Utah State and Hawaii. The victories helped the Vandals clinch second place in the WAC.
