Whitworth men lead NWC track championships

Thanks to dominance in the field events, the Whitworth men’s track and field team has a commanding lead after the first day of competition Friday at the Northwest Conference Championships in Parkland, Wash.

The Pirates had four event champions, including Frank Lima (high jump, 6 feet, 8 inches); Luke Mathews (long jump, 22-2 1/2); Carter Comito (discus, 186-9); and Chase Wright (javelin, 189-7).

The Whitworth women are in fifth place. The event continues today.

• Washington State’s Shaquana Logan and Shawna Fermin led the Cougars women at the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.

Fermin took 12th in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 23.92 seconds. The time was the ninth fastest in WSU history. Logan was 13th in the 100 hurdles. She finished in 13.76, which ranks sixth all-time in school history.

The Cougars men were led by J Hopkins, who took third in the 400 hurdles with a season-best 51.43.

• Gonzaga sophomore Emily Thomas broke her school record in the 5,000 at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore. Thomas finished in 16:56.17, good for fourth place.

The Bulldogs’ Catherine Theobald took seventh in the 1,500 in a school-record 4:38.02.

Baseball

After Gonzaga scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead, San Francisco (17-24, 4-6) scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and beat the Bulldogs 4-3 in West Coast Conference action in San Francisco.

The loss snapped GU’s six-game winning streak.

Clayton Eslick hit a two-run single in the eighth to give the Bulldogs (26-10, 6-4) a 3-2 advantage. The Gonzaga bullpen gave up the two winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.

• Kyle Garlick hit a home run and drove in three runs to lead Oregon (27-10, 11-5) to a 6-2 win over Washington State in Pac-12 Conference play in Eugene, Ore.

Taylor Ard and Adam Nelubowich drove in a run apiece for the Cougars (18-16, 5-7).

• Arizona (25-12, 11-5) scored six runs in the seventh and the 13th-ranked Wildcats beat Washington (19-16, 5-8) 10-2 in Pac-12 Conference play at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Softball

Oregon State rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and the 24th-ranked Beavers (28-14, 5-7) clipped No. 9 Washington (35-10, 6-9) 4-3 in Pac-12 Conference play in Corvallis, Ore.

Honors

Gonzaga’s Peter Gullickson was named to the All-West Coast Conference men’s golf first team. Gullickson is the fourth Gonzaga male golfer to be selected to the WCC first team.

Gullickson finished tied for sixth at the WCC Championship on Wednesday.

• Two Whitworth men and one woman were named to the All-Northwest Conference tennis first teams.

Daniel Redfern, Cameron Williams and Alli Marshall were all first-team selections.

Erica Bosman was named to the second team and Claire Hemming and Jessie Steele earned honorable mention.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock placed linebacker Terence Moore on injured reserve, a mandatory four-week stint. Moore hurt his knee during last Saturday’s victory over Milwaukee. His injury won’t require surgery. Moore has three interceptions and a fumble recovery this season.
