Obituary: Romney, Susan Jacobs

ROMNEY,
Susan Jacobs
1914 - 2012

Susan Jacobs Romney was born on August 7, 1914 on a fruit farm in Riverdale, Utah to Charlotte Emma Baldwin and Murray Kimball Jacobs.

She was one of seven children who have all preceded her in death.

After grade school she attended Weber County High school and played the saxophone in the high school band.

During her senior year she was voted the friendliest girl in school.

This friendliness would be a quality she would exhibit throughout her life.

While still eighteen Susan was called on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the Southern California Mission.

Missionary work would become another hallmark of her life.

After her return home she attended LDS Business College and soon accepted a position as a secretary at Beneficial Life Insurance Company in Salt Lake City.

In 1939 Sue was asked to give a dramatic reading for the Delta Phi rush party at the University of Utah.

It was here that she met Derald Park Romney.

After a six month courtship they were married in the Salt Lake Temple by President Heber J.

Grant.

She and Derald soon left for Boston, Massachusetts where he entered the MBA program at the Harvard Business School.

Upon graduation their professional life took them to Rochester, New York and Portland, Oregon before settling in 1951 in Spokane, Washington.

Spokane would be their home until they returned to Utah in 1990.

Sue was the mother of five children and became the matriarch of a great posterity.

She currently has 23 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren.

During their years in Spokane she served in many capacities in the church being called as Relief Society President of each of the wards she lived in, as well as serving as Stake Relief Society President.

Church service became another great hallmark of her life through her own callings, and also in the great way she sustained her husband during his service as President of the Spokane Stake for 18 years.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Jeffrey Romney (Karen), Jacqueline Kotter Campbell (Donald), Linda Susan Coleman (Jerry), Douglas Romney (Marcy), and Richard Romney (Marci).

She will be remembered as an elegant woman of great grace and civility who had a gift of appreciating and lifting others.

She leaves a legacy of faith and testimony that will be an overarching influence to continually bless her posterity throughout their lives.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Chapel, 2350 East 1300 South.

Entombment immediately following the services at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mausoleum .
