Parsons places seventh at Big Sky women’s golf

University High product Kaitlen Parsons finished seventh at the Big Sky Women’s Golf Championship, which was completed Tuesday in Chandler, Ariz.

Parsons, who competes for Northern Arizona, finished at 2-over 218, five shots behind medalist Carleigh Silvers of Northern Colorado.

The sophomore tied the seventh-best three-round tournament score in school history, one stroke off her best career tournament performance.

“I struggled on one hole and I came back after that,” Parsons said. “We are a young team. It was good for everyone to experience the conference championship. Nerves were flying today.”

Northern Colorado won the team title, shooting 880.

Eastern Washington finished eighth, shooting 950. The Eagles’ top finisher was Caitilin Rice, who finished tied for 17th with a 228.

• Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro shot a 1-under 71 to take a three-stroke lead after the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Mesa, Ariz. Mortellaro is at 3-under 141 with one round to go.

As a team, the Vandals are in second place, 14 strokes behind San Jose State.

College volleyball

Gonzaga signed Paige Folger and Kathleen Wright to national letters of intent.

Folger, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Carmichael, Calif., made the Sacramento All-City team as a senior at St. Francis High. Wright, a 5-10 libero from Simi Valley, Calif., was named the Western State Conference Player of the Year and AVCA first-team Junior College All-America in 2011.

Awards

The Western Athletic Conference honored three Idaho Vandals. Stephane Colle and Andrey Levkiv were named Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week and Almudena Sanz was named Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.
