Brown gets probation for DUI

Singer Bobby Brown was sentenced to three years’ probation and a day in Los Angeles County Jail after pleading no contest Wednesday to misdemeanor driving under the influence in connection with his drunken driving arrest last month, prosecutors from the city attorney’s office said.

Brown, 43, will not have to serve time because he gets credit for time served. He also was fined $390 and must attend a 90-day alcohol education program.

The singer was arrested March 26 after a California Highway Patrol officer pulled him over for talking on his cellphone. He later failed a field sobriety test, authorities said.

Chimp champion to lead Rose Parade

The Tournament of Roses announced Jane Goodall – the renowned chimpanzee expert and endangered species activist – will be grand marshal of the 2013 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Goodall, 78, who will ride in the 124th Rose Parade, will personify the 2013 theme of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” which “is about seizing the moment, throwing off the realistic cares of our daily lives and charging forth confidently,” said Tournament of Roses President Sally M. Bixby, when the theme was revealed earlier this year.

Goodall, who traveled in 1960 from England to present-day Tanzania, continues to research and work on behalf of wild chimpanzees and the environment. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute, a global nonprofit that works to protect endangered species in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park.
