SPOKANE COUNTY – Christian Gunter will speak at Whitworth University’s Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall, 300 W. Hawthorne Road, tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Gunter’s lecture, “Beyond Green: Responsible Property Investing Trends and Strategies,” is the fifth in Whitworth’s 55th annual Great Decisions Lecture Series. Gunter, a 1998 Whitworth graduate, is the director of Sellen Sustainability, the green-building consulting, education and training arm of Sellen Construction, the largest general contractor in the Pacific Northwest.

Prescription drop, shred event planned

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Police Department and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office will host a Prescription Drug Take-Back and shred event on Saturday in the Spokane Valley Police parking lot, 12710 E. Sprague Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All prescription drugs will be accepted, along with pet medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, medical ointments, inhalers; pre-dosed syringes (no needles) and liquid medicine up to 12 ounces. Items that will not be accepted are needles, lancets or syringes with a needle; thermometers; aerosol cans; hydrogen peroxide; personal care products; or business waste.

Attendees can also bring up to three boxes of confidential documents for shredding. Washington State Employees Credit Union will have a shred truck at the event and will shred the documents for free. Business waste will not be accepted.

Celebrity dancing will benefit youth theater

RIVERSIDE – Christian Youth Theater-Spokane will host the fifth annual “Dancing with the Celebrities” on Saturday at the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave., at 7 p.m.

Local celebrities will be paired with professional dance instructors for the performance to benefit CYT-Spokane. Audience members will vote for their favorite by donating money. Each dollar counts as one vote. There will also be student performances, along with wine and refreshments to purchase and an auction.

Participating celebrities this year include: Molly Allen, of 92.9 KZZU; Marianne Guenther Bornhoft, Realtor at Windermere - Manito; Ellena Conway, co-owner of Latah Creek Winery; Derek Deis, anchor at KXLY “Good Morning Northwest”; Julie Humphreys, director for Step UP Spokane; Judy Lee, special events coordinator at Catholic Charities Spokane; Anne Mitchell, owner of LLL Talent; Ken Sax, aka, the Spokane Shock mascot Shox the Fox, and host of “Real Estate Radio with Ken Sax” and Shox the Fox; and Rick Steltenpohl, the executive director of Hoopfest.

Plant sale at Manito Park scheduled for Saturday

CLIFF/CANNON – The Associated Garden Clubs of Spokane will have a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, east of the Gaiser Conservatory in Manito Park.

Plants available will include organic vegetables and herbs, annuals, perennials, hanging baskets and house plants. Proceeds from the sale will benefit charitable organizations and help support the beautification of Spokane and the surrounding area.
