Walhberg glowers in ‘Contraband’

Mark Wahlberg in a scene from “Contraband.”
Philadelphia Inquirer

“Contraband”: Mark Wahlberg, with Popeye biceps and broody stares, stars as an ex-smuggler forced to go back and do one last job in order to stop a twitchy, tattooed thug from menacing his family. Kate Beckinsale is the wife, Giovanni Ribisi the baddie, and Ben Foster the old partner with the fancy loft apartment. Gritty, pulpy, predictable. (1:40, R for violence, pervasive language and brief drug use) • •

“Pariah”: Dee Rees’ accomplished feature debut is a coming-of- age-and-coming-out story of a 17-year-old Brooklyn girl expressively played by newcomer Adepero Oduye. (1:30, R for sexual content and language) • • • 1/2
