Obituary: Vangsness, B.L.
VANGSNESS, B.L. “Van”
August 30, 1918 - April 21, 2012
Mr. Vangsness or “Van” as he was called by his friends passed peacefully at the age of 93 in his bed early Saturday morning.
Van was born and raised on the open range in northern Montana to the son of a Norwegian immigrant and school teacher. He learned to walk and ride horses at about the same time. He also showed a lot of artistic ability and an aptitude for breaking horses at a very young age. Thus he became what is known to many as a “Cowboy Artist” and remained true to his calling his entire life.
Van was a war veteran and spent much of his life as a “job shopper” moving around, but was never really at home unless he was around horses. Van is survived by his son Frank; three grandchildren: Brent Van of Spokane, Shella Vangsness of Las Vegas, and Melissa Phillips of Seal Beach, CA and six great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held at Riverside Memorial Park on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 3:00PM.
