Driver fleeing police causes head-on crash

A Spokane Valley man fleeing police in his Volvo crashed head-on into a car on Sullivan Road Sunday evening, injuring two people. Salvador Casillas Flores, 39, ran from the 6:13 p.m. crash, but Deputy Juan Rodriguez found him hiding in a small cornfield, said Detective Dave Thornburg of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Flores, who police say was drunk, had suddenly pulled into a driveway but didn’t get out of his car when he saw Rodriguez approach near East 24th Avenue and South Progress Road, Thornburg said. Rodriguez thought that was suspicious and turned around to try to get the Volvo’s license plate for a records check. That’s when Flores took off, Thornburg said. The chase proceeded for about a quarter mile before Flores crashed while trying to turn south onto Sullivan. The crash injured Mikayla Hood, 26, and Jasmine Hood, 12. Mikayla was transported by ambulance to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center; Jasmine was taken there for observation, family said. Flores was hospitalized for an extremely high blood sugar level, Thornburg said. He faces charges of vehicular assault, eluding police and hit and run.
