Indians open road trip with loss

KEIZER, Ore. – The Spokane Indians opened a five-game series with Salem-Keizer with their third consecutive loss, falling 4-2 to the Volcanoes in Northwest League baseball action Monday night.

Royce Bolinger went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Joe Maloney hit a solo home run for the Indians, who dropped to 6-7 in the second half.

John Kukuruda (2-2) took the loss for Spokane, allowing four runs on eight hits over four innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Eric Brooks pitched the remaining four innings for the Indians, limiting the Volcanoes to just two hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Spokane took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Patrick Cantwell singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch before scoring on Bolinger’s line drive to right field.

Salem-Keizer, though, responded with three runs in the second inning to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish and added a run in the third for a 4-1 lead. Maloney’s home run in the eighth, his fifth of the season, completed the scoring.

The Indians threatened in the ninth but couldn’t break through.

With the bases loaded and two out after two walks and a single, Preston Beck grounded out to end the game.
