Track and field

American Jennifer Suhr won the gold medal in women’s pole vault, ending Yelena Isinbayeva’s bid for a third straight Olympic title. Kirani James won the men’s 400 meters for Grenada’s first-ever Olympic medal, and Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic took the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Other winners included Belarus’ Nadzeya Ostapchuk (women’s shot put) and Russia’s Yuliya Zaripova (women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase).

Gymnastics

Russia’s Aliya Mustafina won the uneven bars competition. Arthur Zanetti gave Brazil its first medal in gymnastics with a gold on still rings. South Korea’s Yang Hak-seon added Olympic gold to his world title on vault.

Shooting

American Matt Emmons won bronze in the 50-meter three-position rifle competition. Italy’s Niccolo Campriani easily topped silver medalist Kim Jong-hyun of South Korea. In men’s trap, Giovanni Cernogoraz of Croatia beat world champion Massimo Fabbrizi in a shoot-off for the gold.

Cycling

Jason Kenny beat his nemesis for the first time and extended British domination in track cycling. Kenny won the marquee event of the sport, the sprint, over Gregory Bauge of France for Britain’s fifth gold medal out of a possible seven in track cycling.

Sailing

Tom Slingsby of Australia won the men’s Laser class by match-racing closest competitor Pavlos Kontides to the back of the fleet. Kontides took the silver, the first-ever Olympic medal for Cyprus. In the women’s Laser Radial, Xu Lijia of China won the gold.

Judo

American judo fighter Nick Delpopolo apologized after he was expelled from the Olympics for doping, blaming the disqualification on his unintentional consumption of something baked with marijuana.

Boxing

Flyweight Marlen Esparza and middleweight Claressa Shields clinched the U.S. team’s first two boxing medals. Ireland lightweight Katie Taylor and top-seeded flyweight Ren Cancan of China also won.

Field hockey

New Zealand reached the women’s semifinals for the first time by knocking out Germany with a 0-0 draw, and Britain advanced without hitting a ball when China lost to Japan 1-0. The United States lost to South Africa 7-0.

Volleyball: David McKienzie scored 17 points and the defending champion U.S. men’s team clinched a top tournament seed with a win over Tunisia. … Show jumping: Britain won its first Olympic show jumping gold medal in 60 years, edging the Netherlands in a jump-off. … Wrestling: Greco-Roman wrestling golds went to Iran’s Omid Noroozi (men’s 60-kilogram), Russia’s Alan Khugaev (men’s 84-kg) and Cuba’s Mijain Lopez (men’s 120-kg). … Weightlifting: Oleksiy Torokhtiy won Ukraine’s first weightlifting gold of the games, beating Navab Nasirshelal of Iran by just 1 kilogram.
