High Drive bluff forest to be thinned, pruned

HIGH DRIVE – The city of Spokane has received $50,000 from the state to boost forest health in the High Drive bluff area.

The city’s partnership with Friends of the Bluff, a volunteer stewardship group, allowed the Urban Forestry department to access funding from a state jobs bill through the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

The money will be used to thin and prune the bluff’s forest, state forester Guy Gifford said in a news release. The thinning will reduce the risk of uncontrollable fires and improve the health of the remaining trees, he said.

The work will start in September and is expected to cover 50 acres.

Anyone with questions about the project is invited to join the Friends of the Bluff for an educational hike on Aug. 22 or Aug. 29. Meet at 6:30 p.m. either day at 57th Avenue and Hatch Road and come prepared for a one-hour hike.
