Robert Elofson, river restoration director for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, takes stock of a giant cedar revealed where Lake Aldwell, the former reservoir behind Elwha Dam, used to be in Port Angeles, Wash. The dam was removed last March, exposing more than 1,000 acres of land, including an ancient forest felled before the reservoir filled. Note the scars from loggers’ springboards in the trunk.
