Spotlight: ‘La Traviata’ will show at Fox on Thursday
If you’ve not managed to get over to the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox for a Thursday Specticast program, you have one more shot.
The theater is hosting a broadcast of “La Traviata,” filmed at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria. The production stars Kristiane Kaiser and Jean-François Borras.

Over the summer, the Fox has hosted Specticast screenings of “Company,” Lang Lang at the Mendelssohn Festival, and this past week, an evening with Renée Flemming. Country music legend alert. Loretta Lynn, the original “Coal Miner’s Daughter” who spent part of her early married life in Western Washington, has been booked to perform at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino. If you missed the staged reading on Aug. 1 of “Over the River and Through the Woods” by Ellen Travolta, Jack Bannon, Dennis Franz, Patty Duke, Jessica Skerritt and Dane Stokinger, you missed something pretty good. The play itself is everything the actors told me it would be – funny and poignant. The actors were fantastic across the board. At one point, Bannon gave a monologue detailing his character’s relationship with his father that nearly brought me to tears. Joe DiPietro’s play, first staged Off-Broadway in 1994, tells the story of Nick, the grandson of a tight-knit family of Italian immigrants. His decision to pursue a job opportunity 3,000 miles away from his New Jersey home plunges the family into turmoil. There are themes that resonate today. Want to know more? She has been on Broadway and movies, and has recorded five albums. She’s worked with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, delighted Garrison Keillor on “A Prairie Home Companion” and reviewed books for The New York Times Book Review. So, Nellie McKay is a hyphenate – a hyphenate who is coming to the Bing Crosby Theater in October. “The Crazy Cool of Nellie McKay” is being presented by Spokane Public Radio on Oct. 9. Tickets are $24 to $27 and are on sale now through all TicketsWest outlets. As for the music? It’s as hyphenated as McKay. Folk-reggae-pop? Jazz-torch-cabaret? You name it, she’s singing it.
