Obituary: Rein, Patricia Ryan

Age 99

REIN,
Patricia Ryan
(Age 99)

Patricia was born May 20, 1913 died July 21, 2012.

Pat was born in Portland, OR and raised in Portland, Spokane, Beverly Hills, and Seattle.

She attended Lewis and Clark High School.

As a member of the Lewis and Clark orchestra, she enjoyed performing in the Davenport Hotel lobby in the mid 1920s.

Pat had a remarkable memory of her early years.

She shared fond memories of family road trips to Montana, driving over Fourth of July and Lookout Pass with her parents and younger brother, in a 1920s vintage car with only a front seat!

Her family later moved to California where she graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1931, well before it became 90210!

She attended UCLA and graduated with a degree in education from the University of Washington in 1935.

Later she received her masters’ degree in drama and began a teaching career in Western Washington.

She loved to travel with friends to Europe and Asia during summer vacations in the 1930s.

A lowlight of those travels was seeing Adolph Hitler in a military parade in Munich.

A travel highlight was meeting her future husband, Allan Rein, on a cruise to the Orient.

Their first date was in Hong Kong.

Al and Pat were married in Seattle on December 26, 1940.

They settled into life in Seattle and had two children, Gerry and Cathy.

In 1958 Al and his life long friend Si Ranta purchased deVoss Office Interiors which they operated until they both retired in their 80s.

Pat retired from Mountlake Terrace High School where she was employed as both an English teacher and a guidance counselor.

In her retirement she enjoyed travel, swimming several times a week, and attending the symphony and the opera.

Pat’s grandchildren remember fondly the lavish Thanksgiving feasts she prepared annually.

Pat spent the last nine months of her life in Spokane in the care of her son and his wife Geri.

She died peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Her last words were “….tell all the family how much I love them and tell Geri I really enjoyed her running my life.”

Pat was preceded in death by her husband in 2006 and her daughter, Cathy, in 2003.

Pat is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gerry and Geri Rein, ten grandchildren: Lisa (Ross) Holliday of Salem, OR, Erica (Eric) Drenckpohl of Bothell, WA, Randy (Camille) Jones of Sammamish, WA, Tracie (Chris) Lease of Bellingham, WA, Ryan Rein of Bend, OR, Katie (Jeff) Caba of Bend, OR, Joey (Lane) Yonago of Spokane, WA, Donevan (Jenifer) Rein of Edwards, CA, Jeannie (Shay) Mikalson of Bend, OR, Jonathan (Lisa) Rein of Reston, VA, 30 great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews close to her heart.

The family wants to thank Hospice of Spokane, Father Dick Case, S.J., Heritage Funeral Home, and dear friends and neighbors for their unbelievable love and support.

Remembrances can be made to Hospice of Spokane, St. Aloysius Catholic Church, or a charity of your choice.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Pat’s life at one of her favorite places to watch the sunset over Puget Sound.

We will gather at Ray’s Boathouse in Seattle from 6-10pm on September 22, 2012.
