Panthers, running back Stewart agree on extension

The Carolina Panthers reached a five-year contract extension with running back Jonathan Stewart on Saturday.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says the team is “thrilled” to keep Stewart (University of Oregon) around to work with fellow running back DeAngelo Williams, who received a five-year contract last year, and new fullback Mike Tolbert.

The new deal keeps Stewart a Panther through 2017.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available. ESPN, citing sources, reported the deal includes $22.5 million in guaranteed money and is worth $36.5 million overall.

Schaub makes return as Texans beat Panthers

Matt Schaub led one scoring drive and threw an interception in his first action since breaking his right foot last season, and the Houston Texans beat the Carolina Panthers 26-13 in Charlotte, N.C., in the preseason opener for both teams.

Lions’ Moore struggles during first pro game

Kellen Moore, who’s vying for a spot as the Detroit Lions’ third quarterback, struggled in his preseason debut in Friday’s 19-17 loss to the Browns.

Moore, who led Boise State to a 50-3 record in four seasons as starter, completed just 4 of 14 passes for 40 yards and finished with a woeful quarterback rating of 9.8.

Police arrest Johnson for domestic violence

Police say Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson has been arrested on a domestic violence charge, accused of head-butting his newlywed wife during an argument in front of their home in Davie, Fla.

Davie police Capt. Dale Engle said Johnson and his wife, Evelyn Lozada, were at dinner and she confronted him about a receipt she had found for a box of condoms.

Engle said when they arrived at their driveway, Lozada said Johnson head-butted her. She was treated at a hospital for a forehead cut.

Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel said he has no knowledge of holdout wide receiver Dwayne Bowe being spotted in Kansas City, Mo. There were broadcast reports before K.C.’s game against Arizona on Friday night that Bowe was seen at the airport, leading to widespread speculation he was about to report for training camp. Bowe, the Chiefs’ leading receiver the past three seasons, was franchised this year but has refused to sign a contract tender that would pay him about $9.5 million for the year. … Green Bay Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop will need surgery on his injured right hamstring, and coach Mike McCarthy says his season is in jeopardy. Bishop hurt his hamstring and sprained his knee in the first quarter of the Packers’ preseason loss at San Diego on Thursday and had to be helped to the sideline. … Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith said starting middle linebacker Akeem Dent sustained a concussion in the 31-17 loss to Baltimore and will miss next week’s exhibition against Cincinnati. Mike Peterson, a 14th-year veteran, took over for Dent in practice. … Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said New Orleans waived injured rookie guard Andrew Tiller as well as cornerback A.J. Davis and linebacker Nate Bussey. Loomis said the Saints signed cornerback Nick Hixson, guard Paul Fenaroli and tight end Daniel Graham. … The Arizona Cardinals signed fullback Reagan Maui’a and released guard Chris Stewart. … The Chicago Bears signed linebackers Xavier Adibi and K.C. Asiodu.
