Hired The Big East hired CBS executive vice president Mike Aresco to be commissioner of a conference now in rebuilding mode. Aresco has been a vice president in charge of programming for CBS since 1996. He’s handled the network’s contract negotiations with the NCAA for the rights to the men’s basketball tournament. He also negotiated CBS’s 15-year deal with the Southeastern Conference. He has no previous experience working for a conference or university.

• The University of Alaska Anchorage hired Ryan McCarthy as its new women’s basketball coach, just four days after Nathan Altenhofen resigned while under investigation for professional misconduct. McCarthy has been an assistant coach, interim head coach and associate coach at Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, since 2007.

Died Former NFL standout Jimmy Carr, who won a championship in 1960 with the Philadelphia Eagles, has died in Indiana. He was 79. Carr played nine NFL seasons with the Chicago Cardinals, Eagles and Washington Redskins. He was the starting left cornerback on the 1960 title team and had 13 of his 15 career interceptions with the Eagles. Carr also played one season with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL in 1958. After he retired, Carr served 24 years as a NFL assistant coach.

Denied A federal judge in New York refused to allow an early end to supervised release for former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who took money from a professional gambler. Donaghy argued he should be released early because of good conduct and because it’s difficult to find work while under court supervision. The judge denied the request.

Signed The New Jersey Devils signed first-round draft pick Stefan Matteau to an entry-level contract. Matteau, the son of former Rangers forward Stephane Matteau, was the 29th overall pick in June. The 18-year-old Matteau spent the past two seasons with the United States Development Program. He will play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
