Richards-Ross, other Olympic champs head to Stockholm

Sanya Richards-Ross (pictured right) and 10 other newly crowned Olympic champions will switch their attention from gold to diamonds today at the DN Galan track meet at Stockholm. The Diamond League event is the first major meet after the London Games, and the American women’s 400-meter champion will be among 11 gold medalists set to compete at Olympic Stadium – on the 100th anniversary of the 1912 Stockholm Games. Felix Sanchez, the men’s 400 hurdles champion, is in the field, along with 1,500 winner Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria. Makhloufi will be running the 800. Any athlete who breaks a stadium record will be given a one-carat diamond. “I’ve set a goal of mine here in Stockholm – I need to get that diamond,” Richards-Ross said. – AP
