Longtime Edwall area resident Eugene W. Strauss passed away on August 16th, 2012 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, WA.

Gene was born at the Sprague Catholic Hospital in Sprague, WA on December 8th, 1921, to parents Delbert Strauss and Goldie Nelson Strauss.

Gene grew up in the Edwall area and went to school in Edwall schools, graduating from Edwall High School in 1940.

He attended Washington State College (WSU) from 1941-42.

Gene was not able to continue college because of the illness of his father, who died in 1943.

He continued farming in the Saasin area, southwest of Edwall, until 1946.

He then moved to the Espanola area in 1946 and continued farming there.

He remained there until 1972, then moved to Waukon Road and continued farming.

Gene had a new home built, and retired from farming in the fall of 1983.

Gene married late in life, meeting and marrying Eleanor “Ellie” Seifhard of Davenport, WA in 1990.

They enjoyed traveling together and life in the country.

Ellie passed away in 1998.

He loved to garden and grew beautiful roses, dahlias and gladiolas, to name a few.

Tomatoes were a favorite in his vegetable garden.

He was a history buff and had an extensive knowledge of the Edwall area.

As a Lincoln County Museum member, he strived to preserve local history for future generations.

Community was very important to Gene.

He served as past president and member of Edwall Lions Club, master of Waukon Grange and member for over 50 years, member and officer of Edwall Livestock Co-op, board member of Edwall Chemical for 10 years, Lincoln County Democratic Party member, past vice president and board member of the Lincoln County Museum, and treasurer of the Edwall Senior Citizens.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ellie, and sister, Patti Strauss Neilson.

He is survived by his aunt Elaine Nelson, of Seattle, WA; and close friends Doug and Diane Shuman of Edwall.

A Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 9:00 am at Riverside Memorial Park, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA, followed by a Celebration of Life Memorial service at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, WA.
