Education Notebook: Shoes, socks to be distributed

The Mission Community Outreach Center, 1906 E. Mission Ave., has collected 400 pairs of new shoes in a back-to-school shoe drive.

The shoes and socks will be distributed to children in kindergarten through 12th grade from low-income families Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Parents and guardians must accompany the child and will be required to show photo identification and proof of a local address. Children must be present to ensure that the shoes will fit.

New shoe donations will be accepted at the center through this afternoon from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Rogers starts school Wednesday

Rogers High School students go back to school on Wednesday. Other district schools start classes Sept. 4. Rogers is taking part in the three-year School Improvement Grant, which requires the school to add 100 hours to its schedule.

Rogers was awarded $1.5 million for the 2011-’12 school year; $1.3 million for 2012-’13 and $900,000 for 2013-’14. The funds are being used to improve on-time graduation rates and standardized test scores.
