Obituary: Stevens, Delmar J.

Delmar Stevens was born September 19, 1939 in Cold Water, Missouri to Chi and Vesta Stevens.

The family moved to St. Louis where he attended Adams Elemen-tary and Roosevelt High Schools.

At the age of 17 he left school and enlisted in the US Air Force, retiring as MSgt with 21 years service.

During his career in the USAF he was stationed at numerous bases in the US and overseas in France, Germany, Libya, England, Vietnam, Thailand and Guam.

He was trained as an Aircraft Radar Navigation Tech, Hound Dog Missile Analyst and as a B52 Tail Gunner, flying 186 combat missions over Vietnam, receiving ten Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He met his wife Katharine Folkmann from Canada while stationed at Spokane.

They were married in her home town in 1966.

A beautiful daughter, Karen, was born in 1972 and a wonderful son, Michael, followed in 1974.

After retiring from the military he attended Eastern Washington University, receiving a BA degree in liberal studies.

He also worked as a construction electrician and the US Postal Service.

He retired from the USPS in 2004 with 17 years of service.

He was a life member of the Air Force Gunners Association and D.A.V.

He loved boating and was a longtime member of the Spokane Yacht Club where he terrorized its members with his boating skills.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Richard and Donald.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Katharine; children, grandchildren, sisters and brothers.

Delmar passed away August 16, 2012 in Spokane.

A formal service with military honors will be held Friday, October 5, at 2:00 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Jefferson, Missouri.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Spokane.
