In brief: Head-on collision kills both drivers

A head-on collision in Adams County on Friday night killed two drivers in their 20s.

Justin R. Kelly, 24, was driving southbound in a northbound lane of U.S. Highway 395, 24 miles south of Ritzville, shortly after 10 p.m., the Washington State Patrol reported. His 2003 Chevy Silverado truck crashed head-on with a northbound 2008 Chevy Impala driven by Matthew D. Wade, 27.

Both drivers were pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

Kelly, of Newman Lake, and Wade, of Stanfield, Ore., were both wearing seat belts, the WSP reported.

Man at large after firing at officer

A man fired a gun at an Idaho State Police officer Friday night during a pursuit and was still at large Saturday night.

Police have identified Mitchell Lee Walck, 57, as a person of interest. Police say Walck, a transient, should be considered armed and dangerous.

The ISP officer was not injured.

Just before midnight, Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies tried to stop a pickup truck for a traffic violation on Highway 41, just south of Spirit Lake, but the driver fled, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Several law enforcement agencies chased the truck over a 30-minute period.

Eventually the driver fled on foot near Bingham Road in Rathdrum, shooting at the ISP officer who was pursuing him before continuing into the woods.

The suspect is described as 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, with a medium build. He was wearing a long-sleeved gray shirt, light blue jeans and possibly a blue ball cap. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office at (208) 446-1300.
