SEATTLE – King County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Montana man in the 1996 disappearance of a Kirkland, Wash., woman whose body was found years later along a Washington highway.

Detectives from the sheriff’s cold case unit arrested 59-year-old Clifford Everell Reed on Monday at his Victor, Mont., home.

Reed was a co-worker of 28-year-old Sandi Johnson at the time of her disappearance. Her skeletal remains were found in 2004 in Pierce County.

The Seattle Times reports that the King County prosecutor’s office charged Reed on Monday with second-degree murder.

Prosecutors are asking that he be held on a $5 million arrest warrant pending extradition.

According to charging papers, before Johnson vanished, Reed would tell friends he had a relationship with her and they would eventually marry.

Detective Jim Allen wrote in court documents that Johnson denied any relationship and told friends that Reed needed to leave her alone.
