CV edges LC in GSL wrestling opener

Taylor Shey’s 11-2 major decision over Hoke Graham in the night’s final match, at 132 pounds, gave Central Valley a 40-36 win at Lewis and Clark in a Greater Spokane League wrestling opener on Wednesday.

CV tied the match at 36 with Blake Beard’s first-round pin at 126.

LC received big wins from Tyler Taylor, who edged Chauncye Garigan 11-9 in overtime at 170, and Andrew Backlund, who wrestled up from 195 to pin Jake Tinsley at 220.

In other GSL openers, returning state placer John Hoover scored a takedown in overtime to defeat Dylan Schmidt 5-3 at 152 as host Mt. Spokane stopped Shadle Park 37-18. Defending state champion Terrence McKinney got a takedown in overtime to defeat Mt. Spokane’s Christian Nibarger 6-4 at 138. McKinney, a senior, also needed a takedown at the end of the third round to force OT. … Tristyn Sheffield (106), Rhett Risinger (113), Kannon McConnell (126), Jacob Clute (138), Sheldon Moore (160) and Bryson Pierce (170) had first-round pins while leading host North Central to a 53-21 win over Gonzaga Prep. … Sophomore Andrew Boharski defeated senior Cameron Jensen 12-5 at 106 and Mead had 10 pins on the way to a 68-12 home win over Rogers. Mead’s Riley Jackson (138) held off Ian Smith 5-3 after leading 5-1. … University opened with pins by Tyler Burns (195), Skyler Poole (220), Tate Orndorff (285), Cameron Swanson (106) and Kwest Osborn (113) to roll to a 51-15 win over visiting Ferris.

Gymnastics

Cadie Pratt won the balance beam and uneven bars to lead Mead to the team win at a GSL season-opening meet at Shadle Park.

Pratt scored 9.4 on the beam and 8.4 points on the bars to help the Panthers pile up 154.25 points. Central Valley (149.35) placed second, the host Highlanders (137.65) were third and North Central (122.47) took fourth.

Shadle’s Hailey Barry won the all-around with 33.075 points. CV’s McKinzie Carter (31.675) took second, boosted by a win on the vault (8.35).

CV’s Issabella Erdem won the floor exercise with a 9.3.
