Improving A Utah State basketball player who collapsed at practice and had to be revived after he stopped breathing is improving and making good progress, school officials said Wednesday night, although the player remains in critical condition. Danny Berger is awake and talking to his family in a Salt Lake City-area hospital, Utah State basketball team doctor Trek Lyons said at a news conference in Logan. Doctors still don’t know what caused the 22-year-old Berger to collapse on the court during a practice Tuesday in Logan.

Announced Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart has passed up a chance to race for Roger Penske in the Indianapolis 500. Stewart said at the International Motorsports Industry Show that he wouldn’t attempt to race in both the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Sidelined Figure skater John Coughlin, winner of this year’s U.S. pairs championship with partner Caydee Denney, has had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. There is no timetable for Coughlin’s return.

Acquired Sporting Kansas City has acquired midfielder Josh Gardner from the Montreal Impact for the team’s highest pick in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft. The 30-year-old Gardner began his career in 2004 with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Revoked The IOC stripped medals from four track and field athletes caught doping at the 2004 Athens Olympics and held off revoking Lance Armstrong’s bronze from the 2000 Sydney Games. The four athletes had their Athens doping samples retested this year and came back positive for steroids, including shot put gold medalist Yuriy Bilonog of Ukraine. The others are hammer throw silver medalist Ivan Tskikhan of Belarus and two bronze medalists — women’s shot putter Svetlana Krivelyova of Russia and discus thrower Irina Yatchenko of Belarus.
