Honored Hundreds of well-wishers turned out in St. Louis to honor Saint Louis University men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus. The university hosted a memorial service Friday for Majerus, who died Dec. 1 of heart failure. He was 64. Majerus coached for 25 years. He was 517-216 at Marquette, Ball State, Utah and SLU, where he spent the last five seasons.
Revealed NBA commissioner David Stern takes Gov. Chris Christie to task for his efforts to allow sports gambling in New Jersey. Stern made his comments in a deposition in a lawsuit filed by the four major pro sports leagues – the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL – and the NCAA. The deposition was taken last month in New York and published as part of a legal filing. Stern says he’s troubled that Christie, a former U.S. Attorney, would “choose to attack a federal law.”
Announced Two-time Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir is skipping the rest of the season to prepare for the 2014 Winter Games. The three-time U.S. champion did not compete for two years after the 2010 Olympics but announced a comeback last January.
• Creighton basketball guard Josh Jones is returning to Omaha, Neb., for additional tests after fainting before a game. Jones was taken to a Lincoln, Neb., hospital after passing out before the Bluejays’ game against Nebraska in Lincoln on Thursday night.
Sentenced Former NFL wide receiver David Boston was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation for punching a woman last year. Boston pleaded guilty to aggravated battery last month. Authorities say Boston had been drinking at a Boca Raton, Fla., home in November 2011 when he punched a woman twice in the head, leaving a wound requiring 10 stitches.
Raided Authorities raided northeast Indiana properties owned by former New York Jets offensive lineman Jason Fabini and his brother, but the retired player said he’s not the focus of the investigation. Federal, state and local officers with the Safe Streets Task Force raided a Fort Wayne property owned by Fabini, a home owned by his brother, Michael Fabini, and five other area properties Thursday.
Sidelined Chelsea captain John Terry was ruled out of soccer’s Club World Cup because of an ongoing knee injury. Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez says the long flight to Japan wouldn’t help Terry’s recovery.
Released IndyCar released Lotus from its contract, leaving Chevrolet and Honda as the only two engine suppliers for the upcoming season. Lotus chief operating officer Aslam Farikullah said the decision to ask to be released from its IndyCar contract was not easy, and the manufacturer has not ruled out someday returning to the series.
