Neared The New York Yankees and Ichiro Suzuki are closing in on a contract that would guarantee the outfielder between $12 million and $13 million. A person familiar with the negotiations said Thursday the agreement likely would be for two years.

Introduced The Boston Red Sox introduced longtime Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino at Boston’s Fenway Park after finalizing a $39 million, three-year contract. Victorino was sent to the Dodgers at last season’s trade deadline.

Finalized The Minnesota Twins have finalized a $10 million, two-year contract with right-hander Kevin Correia. He will make $4.5 million next year and $5.5 million in 2014.

• Outfielder Andres Torres is returning to the San Francisco Giants after reaching agreement on a one-year contract. Torres still must pass a physical to finalize the deal.

• The Cincinnati Reds and free-agent infielder Jack Hannahan have finalized a two-year contract.

• The Baltimore Orioles finalized a $2 million, one-year contract with outfielder Nate McLouth.

Awarded Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly won the FWAA/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award after leading to the Fighting Irish to their first unbeaten regular season since 1988 and a spot in the BCS national championship game.

Suspended Rutgers has suspended basketball coach Mike Rice three games without pay and fined him $50,000 for a violation of department policy. Athletic director Tim Pernetti said the suspension is a result of inappropriate behavior and language, not NCAA violations.

Backed The International Baseball Federation has formally approved a merger with softball’s governing body in a joint bid to return to the Olympics. Baseball and softball are bidding jointly to win a spot on the program for the 2020 Games. The IOC will vote in September.

Scheduled Creighton guard Josh Jones will undergo a procedure to address a heart problem that caused him to pass out before a basketball game last week. Doctors will perform an ablation on his heart Tuesday to restore a normal rhythm.
