In brief: Driver suspected of killing pedestrian

Authorities with the Washington State Patrol apprehended a driver suspected of hitting and killing a pedestrian after fleeing a separate collision Friday night.

The unidentified driver first hit a vehicle on Interstate 90 near Freya Street and fled, according to WSP Trooper Troy Briggs. The driver then struck and killed a pedestrian shortly after 6 p.m. on westbound I-90 near exit 277 west of downtown Spokane.

The pedestrian was outside of a vehicle that also had been involved in a collision. Emergency responders attempted CPR, but the unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver is in custody on suspicion of hit-and-run and vehicular homicide.

Troopers are investigating. It is unclear whether anyone else was injured or whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

There were dozens of vehicle crashes reported in Spokane County on Friday because of snow and icy conditions.

Snowstorms should miss heaviest traffic

A pair of snowstorms forecast across the Inland Northwest this weekend should arrive during evening and nighttime hours, generally missing the heaviest travel hours both days.

Light snow is possible through the day today with less than a half-inch of accumulation. A high of 36 should prevent roads from icing up.

The snow should pick up starting around 4 p.m., forecasters said. Between 1 and 3 inches of snow could fall in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene through dawn on Sunday.

During the day on Sunday, less than an inch of snow is expected. A high of 35 on Sunday in Spokane should help remove accumulating ice from well-traveled roads.

Another more potent storm will arrive later on Sunday.

Snowfall should increase about 4 p.m. on Sunday and continue through the night. A total of 2 to 4 inches is possible in Spokane and 3 to 8 inches in Coeur d’Alene.

Man sentenced for sharing child porn

A Spokane man was sentenced to ten years in federal prison Friday for possession of child pornography.

Michael Ferguson, 42, was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty Sept. 9.

Ferguson was sharing images of child pornography with other individuals on the Internet, according to authorities. A federal search warrant was executed at his home, where agents found 10 images and two videos of child pornography.

Ferguson was convicted in 1990 of first-degree rape of a child.

Driver arrested after chase, crash

An alleged drunken driver was arrested early Friday after driving the wrong way on Division Street and speeding away from authorities, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A trooper tried to pull over the driver, Ian S. Hill, 26, around midnight, but Hill sped away into a parking lot near Boone Avenue and Washington Street, a WSP news release said. Hill’s truck spun off the roadway onto Atlantic Street and hit a sign.

He eventually drove through an alley, where he crashed into a concrete wall and then a building near Division Street and Sharp Avenue, the news release said.

Hill and his passenger were not injured. He was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of driving under the influence and hit-and-run.
