In brief: Man held while threats investigated

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – A northwest Washington man is being held on $250,000 bail while authorities investigate his reported Facebook threat to “shoot up every school within a 100-mile radius” if his gun rights were taken away in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports that county District Court Commissioner Linford Smith set bail for the 19-year-old on Monday. The Sedro-Woolley man has not yet been charged with a crime.

He was arrested for investigation of harassment threats to kill. In a Friday evening Facebook post, he reportedly referred to the young Connecticut man blamed for killing 20 children and six adults at a school, his mother and himself as “a hero in my eyes.”

The newspaper says authorities and local schools are taking the threats seriously.

Sedro-Woolley is about 60 miles north of Seattle.

Forklifts used to steal Nintendo consoles

SEATAC, Wash. – A King County sheriff’s spokeswoman said thousands of Nintendo Wii gaming consoles were stolen from a SeaTac distribution warehouse over the weekend.

Sgt. Cindi West said the thieves are believed to have driven two tractor cabs to the warehouse. They used forklifts to load two 53-foot-long trailers and a box van with at least 64 pallets of the consoles, then drove off with everything.

KOMO-TV reports the value of the theft is estimated at more than $2 million, including the stolen vehicles.

The white trailers have California license plates and the name “McKinney” on the side. West said the box van has Seattle Air Cargo written on the doors and bears a Washington license plate.

Off-duty officers arrested after crash

SEATTLE – The Seattle Police Department says two of its officers have been arrested on suspicion of a hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said a resident noticed a collision just after midnight Monday, saying a woman was driving a Nissan Altima that had front-end damage. The witness said the woman stopped the car and switched seats with a male passenger and they drove off.

Whitcomb said officers did an area check and found the Altima a few blocks away. Officers recognized the pair in the car as off-duty police officers.

A duty captain responded to the scene, and the pair was arrested.

Police question teens about school threat

EUGENE, Ore. – Eugene police have questioned two teenage boys after a school resource officer heard from a teacher that the students might be planning to bring guns to school later this week.

The Register-Guard newspaper reported that officers talked to the Churchill High School students at their respective homes Monday afternoon. The two did not attend school Monday.

Lt. Doug Mozan said the investigation continues but he doesn’t think either boy has immediate access to firearms. Mozan said it’s doubtful the pair had planned to arm themselves before coming to school this Friday.

Idaho lotto winner doesn’t claim prize

BOISE – Time has officially run out for one lucky winner to claim a $1 million Powerball jackpot.

Idaho Lottery officials say a winning Powerball ticket from a June 20 drawing expired Friday without anyone stepping forward to lay claim to the cash.

Now, the money will be turned over to the state to fund public schools and buildings. The lottery will still pay out $20,000 to the store in Meridian that sold the winning ticket.
