Baseball: The Los Angeles Angels have traded power hitter Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners for left-hander Jason Vargas.

Morales, 29, became expendable after the Angels agreed to a deal last week with free agent slugger Josh Hamilton.

Open practices? How refreshing

Pac-12 football: California football fans won’t have to wait until next year’s season opener to get a good look at new coach Sonny Dykes’ squad.

Dykes said Wednesday all his practices will open to fans and media.

“We don’t have any secrets,” Dykes said. “I don’t know why you wouldn’t want someone to be able to come and watch.”

Dykes’ predecessor, Jeff Tedford, opened a handful of practice to fans during spring ball and fall camp but kept them closed once the season started, except for a 30-minute window at the beginning for media.

“This is not my program, this is Cal’s program,” he said. “They should be engaged and ought to be able to check it out. It’s their program.”

Colleges: The University of Texas-Pan American has accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference starting in July 2013.

All 14 of the school’s sports programs will compete in the conference.

In addition to UTPA, WAC membership for 2013-2014 is scheduled to include Cal State-Bakersfield, Chicago State, Idaho, New Mexico State, Seattle and Utah Valley. Starting with the 2014-15 season, Idaho will jump to the Big Sky in all sports except football. The Vandals will be an independent in football next season.
