CdA girls win after long day

It was a strange day for the Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team Thursday. And for Highland of Pocatello for that matter.

The teams were scheduled to play tonight in a nonleague game. But CdA learned Thursday that school today was canceled because parents were concerned about rumors circulating about a possible shooting plot. By school district rules, all athletic events are canceled.

CdA practiced for 2½ hours. Highland rode a bus for nearly 10 hours before arriving at CdA about 6. The coaches for both teams decided to play at 8:30.

Somehow the third-ranked Vikings fought off fatigue from practice to hold off the No. 2-ranked Rams 42-38 in a nonleague game.

Sydni Parker and Kendalyn Brainard hit free throws to secure the win late. Sydney Williams led CdA (9-3) with 13 points and Brainard had 12.

“We didn’t have a lot of gas in the tank,” CdA coach Dale Poffenroth said. “We couldn’t turn the tempo up because we didn’t have enough gas to do that. We just had to stay on the court and finish the game.”

Poffenroth applauded CdA School District Superintendent Hazel Bauman for canceling school.

“It’s just a basketball game. It’s not the end of the world,” Poffenroth said. “It was the right decision. The good thing is it turned out to be a great game.”

Highland (8-2) continues its two-game swing through North Idaho with a game Saturday afternoon at top-ranked Post Falls (10-0).

Lewiston 45, Moscow 16: The visiting Bengals (10-2) had no difficulties in the nonleague game at Moscow (3-8).

No other details were available.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 51, Pateros 49: The visiting Warriors (5-2) hit clutch free throws in the fourth quarter in the nonleague win.

Karlee Martin led ACH with 29 points and 12 rebounds and Brynna Stevens had 10 points.

• Three games were postponed because of snow – Liberty at Odessa-Harrington; Coeur d’Alene Charter at Mullan and Sandpoint at Bonners Ferry.

The Liberty/Odessa-Harrington game has been rescheduled for Jan. 3 while no rescheduled dates have been announced for CdA Charter at Mullan and Sandpoint at Bonners Ferry.

Moscow 44, Lewiston 35: The Bears (2-4) topped the visiting Bengals (2-7) in a nonleague game. No other details were available.

• Four games were postponed because of weather.

The Liberty at Odessa-Harrington game has been rescheduled for Jan. 3 while the Coeur d’Alene at Flathead (Kalispell, Mont.), Coeur d’Alene Charter at Mullan and Sandpoint at Bonners Ferry games have yet to be rescheduled.
