Upholding rule of law
Mike Davis (Dec. 15) decries Daniel Johnson’s effort on behalf of his client, Matthew Descamps. Davis argues a lawyer’s duty is to the public and not to the client. He forgets that, constitutionally, we the public are well-represented.
We have paid elected officials setting the rules, a paid police force and paid prosecutors. We have the upper hand in this fight, as it should be. Descamps just has one person on his side, Johnson. Fairness and the Sixth Amendment says Descamps should get at least one guy on his side.
Descamps’ case is going to the U.S. Supreme Court. The court thought the case was important and they will tell us why. Descamps may not win, but he is going to get the same shot we would want if standing in his shoes.
Why not wish Johnson the best use of his skill on behalf of his client? Win or lose, when a lawyer challenges the government to do its job, we get the dream of our forefathers: living by the rule of law.
