In brief: Huskies lose another assistant

College football: Receivers coach Jimmy Dougherty is leaving Washington to become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at San Jose State.

He’s the second Huskies football assistant to leave since the season ended.

Dougherty will be reunited with Ron Caragher, the Spartans’ new coach. Dougherty worked as an assistant for two years under Caragher at the University of San Diego in 2007 and 2008 before coming to Washington in 2009. He was offensive coordinator for the Toreros in 2008.

Dougherty said the chance to reunite with a coach he knows, and to become a coordinator, led to his decision. “It just really came down to the fact that I knew I could go and coordinate an offense and call plays and do that,” he said. “Being able to run my own show, along with the fact that I get to coach quarterbacks again.”

Dougherty, under contract at Washington through 2013, was due to make $205,000 next year.

Dougherty is the second assistant to leave UW since the season ended Saturday with a loss to Boise State in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. Running backs coach Joel Thomas is leaving for a similar position at Arkansas. Thomas, the former University of Idaho running back, also joined the staff of a coach he had previously worked for, Brett Bielema.

The twin departures may allow for UW to restructure its offensive staff. The remaining offensive assistants are line coach Dan Cozzetto and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Eric Kiesau.

Ex-Chiefs aide fired by Petes

Hockey: The Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes fired head coach Mike Pelino last week.

Pelino, an assistant coach with the Spokane Chiefs from 1997-99, had a 55-102-14 record with the Petes, including 8-23-4 this season. Pelino was also an assistant for the NHL’s New York Rangers from 2005-09.

The Petes replaced Pelino with Jody Hull, who played 14 seasons in the NHL.
