High scores rule at JBT doubles

Staff And News Services

A trio of 900 four-game series, a couple of 290 games … the scores were high and the matches close in the Junior Bowlers Tour doubles tournament on Dec. 16 at Lilac Lanes.

When the smoke cleared, Jesse Covington and Karl Fencl combined to capture the championship, knocking off top qualifiers Ryan Gately and Tony Werley 447-414 in a tight match.

Steven Talbot and Heather Lundgren finished third, Robbie Winchell and Nathan Rawley were fourth and Casey Schierholz, in his first roll-off, and Anthony Stedeford fifth. Winchell and Rawley led the way into match-play qualifying with 895 and 853 series, respectively, but met some hot opponents and were third going into the five-team finals.

Talbot had the day’s high game, a 297, and Werley had a 290 and a 933 series. Rawley rolled a 914 series and Covington a 901. Lundgren led the girls with a 254 game.

The next JBT is Jan. 6 at Sunset Lanes.
