In brief: Deputies say man slashed tires of patrol cruiser

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Friday on suspicion of slashing the tires of a patrol cruiser.

Two sheriff’s deputies responded to the 9100 block of East Heroy Avenue about 11:40 p.m. to disperse a party, said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Craig Chamberlin.

As they returned to their patrol cars, they found 25-year-old Mikhail Vasyukhnevich slashing the tires, according to reports.

One deputy grabbed Vasyukhnevich as he tried to flee, but Vasyukhnevich resisted and waved a folding knife around, Chamberlin said. The patrol car’s side mirror was broken during the scuffle.

Vasyukhnevich faces first-degree assault, resisting arrest and first-degree malicious mischief charges.

“All four tires were completely flattened,” Chamberlin said. “They had to have a tow truck bring it back to the Public Safety Building.”

Logan McCarthy, 19, came outside and interfered while deputies were detaining Vasyukhnevich, reports said. McCarthy faces charges of obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.

Man seriously injured trying to start fire with chemicals

A Coeur d’Alene man suffered serious injuries Friday while trying to ignite a fire with a bag of explosive chemicals.

Dylan E. Dodd, 20, tried to start a fire after spending the day with friends in an area known as the Hayden Creek shooting pit, according to Kootenai County sheriff’s Sgt. Ward Crawford.

Dodd and Alex L. Encinas, 23, of Athol, were having trouble getting the fire going, so they decided to use some of their leftover exploding target material as an accelerant, according to sheriff’s reports.

As Dodd approached the fire with a bagful of the material, it exploded, severely injuring his right hand.

Dodd was taken to Kootenai Medical Center and listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon. Encinas also suffered lower-body injuries and went to the hospital.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department, Northern Lakes Fire Department and EMS responded to the call about 4:45 p.m.

Investigators said the men purchased the material at a local sporting goods store. No one faces charges.
