Rain, snow to subside later this afternoon

As moderate rain falls across Spokane and Coeur d’Alene today, weather conditions are distinctly more winterlike to the north. An inch or more of snow was reported in lower elevation locations such as Deer Park, Colville, Northport and Loon Lake this morning, the National Weather Service said. A quarter inch of precipitation was measured through 3 p.m. at Spokane International Airport from a wet Pacific storm that arrived near dawn. The snow level was expected to rise to 3,000 feet in the foothills near Spokane. Rain and snow should subside by later this afternoon, forecasters said. Mountains should see 1 to 3 inches of snow by the time the storm exits the region. Today’s high in Spokane should reach 39. At noon, it was 36 at the airport. Higher air pressure will move into the region and stay anchored along the West Coast for much of the next week. Forecasters are calling for dry conditions with a mix of fog, sun and clouds through Tuesday. Temperatures will be near seasonal normals with highs in the upper 30s to 40 and lows in the middle 20s. A potential for air stagnation and gathering pollution has been a concern for the extended forecast.
