In brief: Benewah County mum on inmate’s escape try
Idaho state officials learned of an attempted Wednesday escape at the Benewah County Jail when officials at another jail called to say the inmate had been transferred there, and they wanted him gone.
This is the second time in six months Benewah County has failed to notify the Idaho Department of Corrections of an escape or attempted escape by a state inmate.
Timothy Wesley Allen, 30, was awaiting transfer from the Benewah County Jail to state custody when he tried to break through a wall at the jail, department spokesman Jeff Ray said Thursday.
Jailers discovered the attempted jailbreak about 10 p.m., Ray said. However, the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office transferred Allen to state custody at the Shoshone County Jail in Wallace anyway.
Jailers in Wallace soon called the state official in charge of the facility and asked that Allen be removed as soon as possible.
“(The official) said ‘How come?’ and found out why,” Ray said.
The Benewah County Sheriff’s Office did not return a phone call seeking comment.
Allen has convictions for grand theft, robbery, DUI and accessory to a robbery in Montana in 2009, Ray said.
Routine traffic stop ends with chase, drug arrest
An attempt to stop a driver for going 10 mph over the speed limit in Spokane Valley on Wednesday night turned into police chase with a felony drug suspect, officials said Thursday.
Danny D. Harman, 36, was arrested after Officer Mark Brownell used his patrol vehicle to force Harman’s car into a spin.
Brownell had tried to pull Harman over for driving 35 mph in a 25 mph zone near the 11600 block of East Eighth Avenue when Harman refused to stop, according to the Spokane Valley Police Department.
Brownell found a clear, gallon-size bag in the bed of Harman’s pickup that contained a glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine inside, as well as other bags and a scale with suspected meth on it.
Harman was booked into jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and attempt to elude.
