CV fundraiser includes jazz bands, dancing and dessert
The Central Valley Band and Color Guard Boosters will present “Jazz Under the Stars,” Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the school, 821 S. Sullivan Road.
The evening will be emceed by Brian Albrecht and will include jazz music provided by the Central Valley High School, Evergreen Middle School and Greenacres Middle School jazz bands, dancing, desserts and a silent auction.
Items on the block include Disneyland park-hopper passes, theme park tickets, photo packages, hotel and golf packages, sports and college gift baskets, jewelry, restaurant gift certificates and Valentine’s Day packages.
The money will benefit all of the CV band and color guard programs.
Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults in advance or $15 at the door.

West Valley Solo and Ensemble
Students involved in instrumental music at West Valley High School recently competed in the Eastern Washington Music Educators Association’s Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival.
“Overall, our students received nine superior ratings and four excellent ratings, which are the two highest ratings you can receive,” said Jim Loucks, director of bands. “Also, our Regional Festival includes all WIAA classifications in head-to-head competition, so we are beating some of the 4A schools in the area.”
Eric Heale received first place in snare drum, qualifying for the state championship in April. The percussion quartet also placed first and qualified for state. The brass quartet received a first place award and will compete at state; the percussion quintet received second place and will be an alternate at state. The clarinet quintet earned second place and will be an alternate at state; the saxophone quartet earned second place and will be an alternate at state. In third place, the percussion ensemble and the flute duet of Desirae Kivett and Brooklyn Robinson.
“I am so proud of the kids and look forward to their continued success,” Loucks said.
2011 Washington Achievement Awards
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has named winners of the Washington Achievement Award, which is presented based on schools’ performance in seven categories: overall excellence, language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate, improvement and closing achievement gaps.
Continuous Curriculum School in the East Valley School District was given the award for overall excellence.
In the West Valley School District, West Valley High School and Spokane Valley High School received the award for extended graduation rates while Ness and Seth Woodard elementary schools received the award for overall excellence.
