GOP contest coming to the Northwest

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is bringing his campaign to Washington next week.

State GOP spokesman Josh Amato says Santorum will hold a public event Monday evening. Senate Republican Leader Mike Hewitt says Santorum also plans to meet with Legislative leaders in Olympia in the afternoon.

He will also be speaking in Coeur d’Alene (read more on Hucks Online here .)

The Olympia stops will make the first major presidential campaign gathering in Washington this year. The state’s caucuses on March 3 will begin the process of assigning the state’s 43 delegates.

Santorum’s visit will coincide with Gov. Chris Gregoire’s plan to sign the state’s gay marriage bill into law. The Pennsylvania senator has built strength in the Republican campaign in part based on his conservative stance on social issues, including opposition to gay marriage.

Maine, Arizona and Michigan are first on the nominating calendar before Washington’s caucuses.

Why should any of the candidates pay any attention to Washington or Idaho? The few electoral votes Idaho has are sure to go to the Republicans, so maybe the Republican candidates might give it a little attention, but 4 electoral votes is hardly worth the bother. Washington has 12, which is at least enough to grab a candidate’s passing attention. It’s also home to some very rich people. The only catch is that the electoral votes are certain to go for Obama this year, so there’s no point in the Republicans even fighting

washington will matter this year. there is no clear winner at this point. despite the reports paul has captured many delegates and might be able to work his way on the ticket because of this. also, i read an article that the bush crime family might be able to weasel their other idiot son the nomination at a brokered convention.

idahocity, Washington will matter in the Republican nominating process, but it won’t matter in the general election. Washington is as sure to go Democratic as Idaho is to go Republican. The only reason for Washington Republicans to participate is in the hope that they can pick a nominee who will win in enough other states to take the general election.

true. unless paul wins the nomination i see no reason to vote republican. romney is basically obama in about every way except he’s more in bed with wall street and the bankingocracy, santorum is a mockery of a sham of a conservative and gingrich is just evil globalist scum.

Ron Paul can’t win the nomination, but I would love to see him run as an independent. He’s the only honest man in the race, in my opinion, and he’s the only one that will ask the unaskable questions like “Why are we fighting foreign wars?”, “How is Wall Street connected to the US Treasury?” and “Why should the federal government punish a person for growing and smoking a plant?” Everybody else avoids those questions or gives the weaselly answers that the pollsters tell them to give.

I would love to see three-way debates between Obama, Romney and Paul. The first two would try to contrast themselves when there isn’t really much of a contrast, and the third would bring up all the uncomfortable things that would make the other two sound suspicious just by their silence. It might actually make the campaign interesting.

ah the old he can’t win jedi mind trick. if he doesn’t win he’s not going to run as third party. the party is lying about the vote totals but they can’t alter how many delegates he’s going to bring with him to the convention. he’s not going to jeopardize the take back of the party by jumping ship.
