Gonzaga women steamroll San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — Katelan Redmon scored 18 points, Kayla Standish recorded her third consecutive double-double and No. 19 Gonzaga bounced back from its worst conference loss in a decade to beat San Francisco 79-59 on Saturday. Jazmine Redmon added 10 points for the Bulldogs (22-4, 11-2), who moved into sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference, one-half game ahead of BYU. Two days after losing to the Cougars by 30 points, Gonzaga didn’t have any problem handling the smaller Dons on the road and led by as much as 29 before coach Kelly Graves emptied his bench. The Bulldogs shot nearly 47 percent in the second half and nearly doubled the Dons in rebounds with a 53-27 advantage. Rheina Ale scored 19 points and became San Francisco’s career leader for minutes played, but the Dons (4-22, 2-11) still lost their fifth straight. Gonzaga got off to another slow start on offense and committed 19 turnovers overall while going 4 of 14 from 3-point range. Despite all that, the Bulldogs still won their 13th straight against San Francisco with little problem. Standish, who missed her first 10 shots and was held to 12 points in the 70-40 loss to BYU, made her first three attempts in the second half and scored 15 after intermission. She finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, her seventh double-double this season. The Bulldogs also won on a slow night from Katelan Redmon, who took just eight shots but went 10 of 10 on free throws. Standish helped get Gonzaga going, scoring eight points in the first 8 minutes of the second half. She also had a big block of San Francisco’s Katy Keating that led to a layup by Jazmine Redmon that made it 50-33. The Bulldogs continued to pull away and went ahead 79-59 on Meghan Winters’ 3-pointer with 2:19 left to play. San Francisco got another solid all-around effort from Ale, who went 8 of 8 on free throws and added seven rebounds, while Bailey Barbour scored 12 points and Jamie Katuna added 10. Ale scored eight of the Dons’ 25 points in the first half to keep things interesting. She made a short jumper to pull the Dons within 25-23 with 4:16 left in the first half and later scored on a layup, but San Francisco couldn’t get off a tying shot despite two consecutive turnovers by the Bulldogs. Gonzaga then went on a 13-2 run to pull away. Katelan Redmon keyed the charge with six points, while Jazmine Redmon added five.
