Spokane man arrested after fighting with deputy

A Spokane man who reached for a knife in a fight with a sheriff’s deputy in Spokane Valley on Sunday night was arrested and charged with several felonies. Brendon T. Kaluza-Graham, 24, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of first-degree attempted assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, obstructing a public servant and other charges, a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office news release said. Deputy Darin Powers saw Kaluza-Graham “acting suspicious” around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Denny’s parking lot at Pines Road and Sprague Avenue. Kaluza-Graham ducked between two parked vehicles then ran when Powers attempted to talk to him. Powers chased him across the intersection to the Rite Aid parking lot, where he left his patrol car and continued the pursuit on foot. Kaluza-Graham allegedly attempted to grab a folding knife in his waistband as Power caught up to him, the release said. He continued to resist and fight with Powers until additional deputies, along with a “good samaritan,” arrived to help. Powers’ knee was injured during the incident. Kaluza-Graham received some cuts and bruises and began vomiting after his arrest, the release said. Both received medical treatment and were released. An investigation determined Kaluza-Graham had stolen the vehicle he was near when Powers initially tried to talk to him. Deputies found substances believed to be methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana on him, the release said. The vehicle was returned to its owner.
